Hi again! As Liz and Tim know, I work driving a shuttle bus for the employees of The Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport. I have to tell you something that was pointed out to me by two ladies I had on board.

I had picked them up at Terminal 3 of the airport and was returning with them to the Employee parking lot. Now, the airport was built in an area with...and it's been mentioned here before...American Indian burial mounds. I did not know this until I began working there. Surrounding the employee parking are about 4 of these mounds, one of them actually separates the front lot from the back lot.

The back lot is closed right now for repairs, so we pass between a row of parked cars to a temporary pick up area. It is in the back, near the mound that separates the lots. Both of the ladies I had on board were older women, probably in their mid 50's. One was a flight attendant, and the other a food service worker.

I heard the flight attendant ask the other woman, "What is that?" The other woman responded that she didn't know, and asked me to look at what they saw. I had to stop the bus to see it...but what they were looking at tonight was a mist. It was about 5' or so high...hard to tell, really, being that the bus sits high and the mound was approx. 50 yards away from us.

This "mist" glided up the side of the mound and half way across the top of it before it dissipated...as if it were blown away by the wind. At first, it was hard to see through because it was so dense. By the time it reached the top of the mound, it had become more transparent, but never...not once...did it change shape, or did bits of it "drift" off...it stayed put together in the same shape we saw it in from the bottom of the mound to the top until it simply "wisped" away.

It was odd...never have I seen anything like it. There were no vehicles running close to the burial mound, so it wasn't exhaust. There was no fog. Fog tends to settle in lower areas anyway. This "mist" moved up, against the breeze.

The ladies were a bit taken back, and asked me if I'd please remain there with my bus until they reached their respective cars. I obliged them, and went on my merry way.

It was a bit odd. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Has anyone ever seen something like this, and could it possibly be explained by something else? I have to say it baffled me.

Laura

Definitely interesting, for sure. When I first read this, I was leaning towards a swarm of insects, but you say it never changed shape. A swarm would definitely change shape and would probably not be very visible from 50 yards away at night. My next idea was exhaust, but you pretty much blew that one up too. The only idea I have left, and it's a pretty weak one, to be honest, would depend on the moon phase, the weather that night, and the area itself. I was thinking that if it was a full moon, it may have been a small, fast moving cloud that cast a shadow... Like I said, not a very strong idea, but without seeing it myself, that's about all I could come up with. Thanks for sharing an awesome experience!

I never thought about insects...but usually swarms kind of undulate. It was rather muggy that evening. I just don't know of any kind of naturally occurring mist phenomena that would move steadily up a hill, against the wind and then just simply dissipate. It was odd...I keep scouring weather sites to try and find some kind of natural explanation. Without being able to actually leave the bus to investigate, I am very limited as to what I can come up with.

The cloud theory is also plausible. Wish I could have investigated closer.

Thanks, Tommy, for your input!

Indian burial grounds seem to always have strange happenings. And in line with your strange sighting, I'm in ct right now visiting family, and my grandmother's old home (my aunt's now) that have an Indian burial ground in the surrounding woods that have many tales of strange noises ans sightings. As for your mist, I didn't see it for myself, but I can't think of anything logical that it could be. First thought is fog, exhaust, or smoke, but going up hill against the wind make no sense. Hopefully if you see it again your able to get a picture.

There is no solid proof that there are indain burial grounds at the airport, those mounds were most likly put there when they built the parking lot. However i was able to find the locations of 13 faimly plots on the airport grounds:

Thanks for doing some research on that. Everyone up and around the airport says they are Indian burial mounds. Your map explains why the Employee parking lot is essentially cut "in two," so to speak. It looks like the Joseph Brown plot is there.

It's interesting too, that there is nothing to be found of burial mounds at the airport. This folklore has been spread around about CVG since I was very young and lived here in Boone County. Chalk it up to just that...if we cannot find proof, then it is folklore unless proven otherwise.

Again, Thanks, Tim!
